High Chair Cushions
Now that you’ve planned or purchased your wood high chair you want to know how to protect the investment. After all, you can expect that with proper care you’ll be able to pass this piece of your baby’s history on to your grandchildren!
High chair cushions provides protection for your wooden highchair, and it also adds a decorative element. Forget boring baby prints – cushions nowadays are as varied as the rainbow.
A cushion is also a smart choice if you’re already using an heirloom high chair. A cover will keep it safe so it can be passed down yet again, and it will help it match the decor in your modern home perfectly.
There are several options in high chair cushions. First, decide on your materials. Generally you can find a cloth, a coated cloth, or plastic material.
Cloth fabrics give a classic look and feel to your high chair. Fabric just tends to look stylish and attractive. A fabric high chair cushion is breathable, so your baby won’t get too hot and sweaty sitting in the chair. This is especially important in the summer.
You can usually throw a cloth high chair cushion into the washing machine, which is very handy for getting rid of food and drink spills! Do be careful as you pick your cushion, though, because some fabric cushions require you to hand wash them. This may be worth it if you really like the cushion, but as a busy parent you just may
not have the time to do this night after night… and babies are messy eaters!
You’ll be able to find some high chair cushions made from a cotton/poly blend – these can often be spot cleaned and thrown in the washer. They offer the best of both worlds! They’re often more thickly padded than a simple cotton cushion.
Read customer reviews for your selected cushion – some colors and models will fade more than others.
A coated cloth cushion will have the attractive look of fabric with a slight shine, because the cushion is coated in vinyl. Though it doesn’t look quite as classic, there are a lot of benefits to a coated cushion.
First, the cushions are often thickly padded to give extra comfort to your baby. Second, they wipe clean easily! They also protect the high chair from spills and stains from baby’s eating adventures. You can quickly wipe them down after your baby’s meal – it’s not a tedious process of taking the cover off, scrubbing it, hanging it to dry, etc.
I recommend you periodically lift up the cover to check under the cushion. Baby food can often fall beside the cushion and work its way down under, where it will not only turn into a mess, it could ruin the wood of your high chair. So do periodically check under there when you’re wiping it clean… I speak from experience!!
Fully plastic high chair cushions have the same benefits as a coated fabric. Neither of these options breathes particularly well, but they are easy to wipe clean. They also tend to have plenty of padding, so they’re good choices for ease of use.
No matter which high chair cushions you’re considering, you’ll find a wide variety of styles and prints that go way beyond the “typical” baby patterns. This is a welcome relief for modern parents – choose something that fits your… and your baby’s… unique style!
